BREAKING NEWS: Trump, Kim begin high-stakes summit in Singapore

All eyes on the Singapore summit. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong un went into much-anticipated talks in Singapore Tuesday morning.

The two leaders were escorted into the summit room at around 9 pm. EST on Monday.

The U.S. says its objective is denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula

North Korea wants a peace treaty and an end to crippling sanctions.

How the two leaders approach the contentious issues will determine the outcome of the meeting, which , if successful, will lead to a process of negotiations.

For Trump the summit is a high-stakes foreign policy move.

Ahead of the meeting, Trump blasted his critics.

For Trump, the summit has gained much greater significance as he deals with parting of ways with major Western leaders on the issue of international trade. He has criticized Canada, the northern neighbor as indulging in backstabbing and called its prime minister weak,

Major European powers also do not see  trade issues eye to eye with Trump, beginning an unprecedented phase of serious differences with close allies.
