Flash floods after two hours of heavy rains left 24 people dead and more than 20 girls attending a summer camp missing as rescue teams worked against speeding floods in Texas Hill Country Friday.
Kerr County Sheriff Larry Leitha confirmed the deaths, speaking at a Press Conference alongside Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick
By Friday night, rescue operations saved 237 people including 167 by helicopter.
Patrick said there hadn’t been “a drop of rain until the tragedy struck” earlier in the day.
The Guadalupe River had risen about 26 feet in 45 minutes.
Families of girls who were attending Camp Mystic waited excruciatingly for their recovery.
Emergency rescue and search operations involve hundreds of workers.
“We brought in over 100 troopers this morning,” Col. Freeman Martin, director of the Texas Department of Public Safety, said.
“And they’ve worked all day, rescues, high water vehicles, boats, rescue divers, seven rescue helicopters with hoist capabilities.”
