The Senate Tuesday passed President Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill on tax breaks, spending cuts and immigration programs. The legislation now goes to the U.S. House of Representatives for final approval.
House Speaker Mike Johnson now faces a challenging task to reconcile with the Senate version after the chamber enacted changes to the bill.
The GOP is working to have the bill signed by President Donald Trump by July 4 deadline.
After a long debate over the measure and proposed amendments, the final vote in the Senate was tied at 50-50.
Vice President JD Vance broke the tie with his vote.
Three Republican senators opposed the bill, which according to Congressional Budget Office, will expand the national debt by $3.3 trillion over the next decade.
The Senate contended with opposition to spending cuts for programs like Medicaid.
President Trump has defended the bill, which also allocates finances for immigration measures, saying his administration will offset the costs by achieving higher economic growth in the next few years.
