President Donald Trump will decide in the next two weeks whether the U.S. will actively participate in the Iran-Israel conflict that has worsened since Tel Aviv launched a series of strikes to stop Iran from advancing its nuclear program.
The White House statement on Thursday came a week after the war broke out between the two strong Middle Eastern countries.
Over the past few days, Israeli officials asked Trump to directly engage in the war against Iran while Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned Washington against that prospect.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters Thursday:
“Based on the fact that there’s a substantial chance of negotiations that may or may not take place with Iran in the near future, I will make my decision whether or not to go within the next two weeks.”
Tehran warns U.S. against direct involvement in Iran-Israel conflict; Trump keeps options open
Trump’s statement indicates that he is willing to give diplomacy a chance. Since the start of the conflict, Trump has been urging Tehran to accept the U.S. deal to resolve the dispute over its nuclear program.
Meanwhile, Israel threatened Iran with consequences of an attack on a hospital in an Israeli southern region.
Iran has rejected the contention that it intentionally carried out a strike on the hospital.
“This morning, Iran’s terrorist tyrants launched missiles at Soroka Hospital in Beersheba and at a civilian population in the center of the country,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said.
“We will exact the full price from the tyrants in Tehran,” he said in a post on X platform.
In Tehran, officials said Iran did not deliberately target Soroka Hospital in southern Israel.
“Our powerful Armed Forces accurately eliminated an Israeli Military Command, Control and Intelligence HQ and another vital target,” Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said in a post on his X platform account.
The hospital damage, he said, resulted from the blast wave and the hospital had been largely evacuated,
