U.S. President Donald Trump has warned countries against backing policies of the BRICS alliance, saying they will face an extra 10 percent tariff on their exports to the United States.
Trump’s statement came as the alliance – that includes Brazil, China and India – wrapped up a summit in Rio de Janeiro, where the leaders affirmed their commitment to strengthening multilateralism, defending international law, and striving for a more equitable global order.
In a social media post, Trump, who uses trade as a foreign policy instrument, wrote Monday morning:
“Any country aligning themselves with the Anti-American policies of BRICS, will be charged an ADDITIONAL 10% tariff. There will be no exceptions to this policy.”
In April, the U.S. president, who has long argued that the trade partners have unfairly benefitted from commerce with the United States, imposed a 10 percent baseline tariff on all imports into the country. In addition, the Trump Administration determined reciprocal tariffs on imports from all countries and announced their enforcement.
Later, Trump paused the tariffs to allow time for bilateral negotiations with countries on reaching trade deals.
Before the pause ends on July 9, the White Hosue has sent letters to several countries, informing that they would be required to pay certain tariffs on their exports to the United States if they do not reach an agreement.
The U.S. Administration has set August 1 as the deadline for enforcement of April 2 tariffs on countries that do not strike a deal with Washington.
President Trump advocates America First policy and has been a longtime critic of BRICS.

Some leaders of the alliance hailed the summit for its commitment to multilateralism.
Meanwhile, the BRICS leaders in their final statement said, “we want to reaffirm our commitment to the BRICS spirit of mutual respect and understanding, sovereign equality, solidarity, democracy, openness, inclusion, collaboration and consensus.
“Building upon the past 17 BRICS Summits, we are now extending our commitment to strengthening cooperation within the expanded BRICS, based on three pillars of cooperation: politics and security, economy and finance, and cultural and people-to-people cooperation.
“We are also enhancing our strategic partnership to benefit our peoples by promoting peace, a fairer and more representative international order, a revitalized and reformed multilateral system, sustainable development, and inclusive growth.”
